This article is really more for the marketer who is already seeing a fair amount of success but does apply to everyone as time seems to be an issue for anybody who is marketing a product or service on the Internet.

As you start to achieve some success on the Internet you will find that things start to happen that didn't happen before.

The first of these is that you begin to make more sales. Now while you may not immediately understand why this can be a time consuming thing in itself, remember, more sales means more customer support. People who purchase your product or service are going to have questions or problems. That is just the nature of the beast. This means more emails or phone calls that you have to answer.

The next thing that happens is that you will find you have more money to use for additional advertising resources to make even more sales. Well, this advertising doesn't just happen all by itself. Many times an advertising method requires a hands on approach. That means more time that you need to spend either writing ads or submitting them to the various places.

Another thing that happens, more often than not, is that as your business grows, your product line grows or has to be improved. This can sometimes mean hours of R&D. If you don't have a big staff then most likely you're handling this all on your own.

Do you see what's happening? The day isn't getting any longer but you now have more things in it that need to be done.

What do you do?

Well, it's actually easier than you realize if you look at it logically.

The things that MUST come first are customer service. If you have a customer or potential customer with a question or problem, just have to answer it as soon as possible. Poor customer service is the biggest reason that companies go out of business. So that has to be your top priority. In other words, whatever time is needed during your day to take care of your customers, that's where you need to spend it.

After that, you basically concentrate on the things that will bring you the most money. That means promotion comes ahead of development. After all your advertising is done, then you can work on improvements to your product or service. No money coming in means all the improvements in the world won't matter.

Finally, after all of the essential things are taken care of, you can concentrate on the less important things. Maybe you have an idea for a completely different business. You don't want to spend too much time on that and neglect your current business. If you have an hour in your day to hash out some ideas, great. But don't take time away from the things that are immediate money making activities.

By following the above tips, you have a good shot in getting a hold on your business and keeping it from getting out of control.
