One thing we didn’t mention in the previous article is IP addresses. Why is this important? Well, let’s look at a hypothetical situation. You know that the number of sites linking to your site is very important. So why not just put up 100 web sites of your own and link them all to your main site?
Here’s the problem.
One of the things that Google looks at when determining the importance of a site is the IP addresses of the sites linking into the main site. Why? Because if all the IP addresses are coming from the same place, Google knows that it’s just somebody putting up a bunch of pages to try to increase their ranking. That’s why Google looks at IP addresses and that’s why doing this won’t help you one bit. Google may be a pain in the backside, but they’re not stupid. They’ve got their system down to the point where it is very difficult to beat it unless you use legitimate methods.
Okay, let’s move on. Now that we know what sites are linking to our target site and have all the information that we need as far as inbound links, we now want to copy it. In other words, all of the sites that are linking to our target site, we want to link to our site as well. How do we do this?
We have to do what is called a “link request”. This is a time consuming process, but if you’re going to beat your competition, it needs to be done. Remember, if you’re targeting long tail keywords, you won’t have as many sites to contact. That’s why I say don’t go after the big boys. Choose your keywords niche carefully and this will cut down on the amount of work you will have to do.
Now, we can do this process by hand, going to each web site and finding a contact email address to write to or we can simply use SEO Elite to do this. Now do you understand why this tool is to important? SEO Elite will give you all the contact addresses of all the sites without having to look them all up. Then all you have to do is fire up one email and send to all the sites at once. Just remember to use the blind carbon copy to do this. With SEO Elite, you can email to thousands of sites at one time.
Now, while you’re doing this, you’re going to get some replies back agreeing to a link exchange. This is where you’re going to have to set up your own link page. You don’t want to have more than 25 links to any one site on a single links page. Also, each link page should relate to a specific theme. You don’t just want to throw all your links together.
The best way to do this is to set up a link page with general categories, such as business, finance, etc. Then as people click on each category they will be taken to a page of links for that category. This keeps your link pages tight and easy to navigate. Search engines love link pages that are set up this way.
So an example of how this would work would be as follows:
On your main links page you would have something like this…
Business
Finance
Marketing
When somebody clicks on the Business link, they’ll be taken to a page that looks something like this.
Business Category 1
Business Category 2
Business Category 3
When somebody clicks on one of these, they’ll be taken to the page that actually has the links to the individual sites.
Keeping your link pages in this fashion will make updating them very easy.
See you next time.
