In this installment on SEO, we’re going to show you how to keep Google from penalizing or worse, banning your website. Unfortunately, there are people out there who don’t follow the rules and try to use tricks to move up the search engine ranks. These tricks only end up getting them penalized, or in some cases, banned from ever getting into the search engines.
The first thing you have to know is how to tell if your site was banned by Google. Now, this will not work for new sites because they’ve never been listed yet. This process will only work if you were listed by Google at one time or another.
The first thing you do is simply go to the Google search engine and type in the URL of the site. If the site is still listed, it means you haven’t been banned. If the search comes up empty then that means your site has been banned.
The second thing you can do is bring up your site in your browser. Make sure you have the Google toolbar installed. If you bring up your site and you see the rank is totally grayed out, this means that your site has been banned.
Okay, now that you know how to check to see if your site has been banned, the next thing we need to learn is what exactly it is that causes this to happen. Knowing what these things are, if you simply avoid doing them, your site will not be banned.
The first thing not to do is add hidden text to your site. Many people will do this in an attempt to keyword stuff the page. Google will scan for hidden text and if they find you have keyword stuffed, they will ban your site, plain and simple.
Another thing that people use is what is called alt image tag spamming. What they do is take images that appear on the web page and in designating alternate text to appear in the images place, in the case of some text browsers, they’ll use alternate text that is nothing more than just keyword stuffing. If a site is caught doing this, they will also be banned by Google.
The next thing that some people do is what is called meta tag stuffing. They usually do this in the keyword meta tag. What they’ll do is stuff the tag with multiple instances of the same keyword, over and over. This is really dumb because this is the first thing that a search engine looks at. So if they find you doing this, they will ban you in the blink of an eye.
Another thing that some people will do is what is called title tag stuffing. This is where they will make the title of their site nothing but a list of keywords. This is also pretty dumb as this is one of the first things Google looks at. So if you’re caught doing this, you got it, ban city.
If you looked at a lot of these techniques, you’d probably think to yourself that you’d never think of doing things like this. But trust me, the temptation is always going to be there because you think you can trick the search engines. Trust me, you can’t.
So, play by the rules and you’ll do just fine.
See you next time.
