In our last article, we talked about ways we could get our sites banned by Google by doing things on purpose. But there are ways we can get our sites banned by accident without really knowing that we’ve done it. We’re going to cover some of those ways in this article. Pay close attention because this may very well be one of the most important articles you ever read on SEO.

Let’s first dispel a few myths.

The biggest myth that needs to be done away with is that if your site is listed on a link farm it will be banned by Google. This is not true. Think about it. If this were true, a competing web site would just put a link to your web site on a link farm and destroy your site. So let’s just kill this myth right now. Link farms will not get your site banned.

Another myth is that if unrelated sites link to your site, this will also hurt your ranking. Again, think about this. If it were true, competing sites would simply go to some oddball site and post your link there. Again, this is just a myth.

Another myth is that sites with a PR of 1 will not help you. This is not true at all. Any related site that has your link on it, regardless of PR ranking will help you. Naturally a PR 7 site will help you more, but any site with your link on it will help you.

The only way that you can be penalized is if YOU link to either a link farm site or a site that is banned by Google. The reason is because this is something that only YOU can do to your own site. So yes, linking to a link farm from YOUR site will kill you but NOT the other way around.

Now, here is where you have to be very careful and why SEO Elite comes in so handy.

But 5 months down the road this site uses some black hat methods of getting up the search engines and ends up getting banned by Google. Guess what? And if you don’t check on this often, you can end up dropping like a rock in the search engine index and not even know it.
