Writing Articles(2)| Article #180 : ARTICLE WRITING – PART 13

In this article we’re going to discuss an advanced topic that I call Tone N Target. I know this is a topic that you probably never saw discussed before. Well, that’s about to change.

This is something that almost NOBODY talks about, but it is SO important when you are writing an article. And if you follow this outline, this concept literally IS TNT.

What you have to understand is this. People who read certain kinds of articles are certain kinds of people. If somebody is looking for an article on the latest IPod downloads, most likely these are young people who like to think of themselves as cool. So you’re not going to write an article that’s so stuffy and dry that they’ll want to gag at the first paragraph. You want your article to be fresh and snappy and most of all FILLED WITH ENERGY.

What about somebody who is looking for a natural cancer cure? What kind of frame of mind do you think this person is going to be in? Do you think they are going to respond well to “Hey, got cancer. No problem my friend. We’ll have you fixed in a jiffy.”

No, you need a more serious, but yet still reassuring tone. You want to put your reader’s mind at ease that there ARE natural treatments for cancer and that they CAN have a quality life.

What about somebody who is looking for a “how to” article, like “how to build a sun porch?”

In this case, you’re dealing with young and possibly old. Many kinds of people build sun porches. So you want your article to be middle of the road. Not too hip and not too stuffy. You want to appeal to the masses. It isn’t easy to do, but by keeping the tone strictly instructional, you should appeal to most people.

The key to doing this is to first sit down and think about what kind of person is going to be interested in the article you’re going to write.

Even with a broad topic like music, there are so many wide ranges of people you are going to reach, from the older more sophisticated group that listens to opera to the kid on the street who really digs rap.

In other words, know your audience. You have to fit the tone of your article to the audience that is going to read it or you will lose them before they ever get to paragraph 2.

If the tone of your article matches your target audience, you have a better chance of getting them to your web page even if the article itself isn’t the greatest thing since Ed Sullivan brought the Beatles to American TV in 1964.

TNT – It’s absolute dynamite.
