PlanningArticle #231 : LONG TERM PLANNING
Many of us, when we first start out in Internet marketing, can’t think past just getting our first site up and making some money. My first site was actually one on web design. I put it up without thinking about what the competition was or even whether or not there was a demand for web designers. For that matter, I never even considered whether or not I’d even be able to keep up with the work. I soon found out, after partnering with Inetwebservices, that there was more work involved in putting together a website for somebody than I could have possibly imagined. Talk about not having a long term goal. I didn’t have a clue to what tomorrow would bring me.
This is a problem that many of us have. We get into our first Internet money making business and don’t even think about tomorrow, let alone 1 year from tomorrow.
This is a formula that is begging for disaster.
Let’s take a fictitious example to illustrate how not having a long term goal can literally kill your business.
Let’s say you’re heavily into Google Adwords and you have figured out that there is a problem with Adwords that can make it so that those using the system will get virtually no impressions or clicks. So you decide to write a book on the problem and sell it. Okay, great. Now what? What happens if 3 months down the road this problem no longer exists? Your book becomes useless because it focused on just one aspect of Google Adwords. So now, you have to come up with another product. Except you didn’t think that far ahead. So, you have a book that is no longer selling and no product to take its place. This is why long term planning is so important. You’ve got to always be thinking of what your next product is and what your next move is going to be.
The really smart marketers release a series of products in stages where one builds on the one before it. What they’ll do is simply map out everything that they want to put into a couple of years worth of products. Then, after they have the overall outline complete, they’ll break the various ideas up into 4 or 5 products to be released over that period of time. Maybe they’ll release 1 product every 3 or 4 months. In the meantime, while they’re doing this, they’ll start working on ideas for the next 2 years worth of products. They’ll have the time to do this because they’ve already got enough products lined up to sell for 2 years.
This is why you always see the top marketers coming out with something every few months. They don’t just sit back and soak in the success of their current venture. They immediately get to work on the next hot new item.
Is this a lot of work? Of course it is. You literally never get a break. But if you want to succeed in this business, and I mean REALLY succeed, this is the kind of work ethic that you need to develop.
