PlanningArticle #233 :THE PROVERBIAL BRICK WALL

It happens to the best of us. You’re rolling along just fine with your business and then suddenly you hit that proverbial brick wall which takes the form of your worst nightmare. For some, it’s that their traffic has stopped. For others, it’s that they can’t think of the next new idea. And for some it’s simply a matter of their hosting provider has gone out of business and left you with a domain that nobody can go to. What do you do when that brick wall hits you square in the jaw?

The numbers of brick walls you can run into are infinite, so there is no way we can cover all the possibilities. But the key to dealing with the proverbial brick wall is being able to think on your feet and not panic. Those who can do this will limit the downtime of their business, should it come to something that drastic.

Let’s take the example of your traffic simply coming to a dead stop for some reason and you have no idea why.

Well, the first thing you have to do is look to see if your site is still operational. Maybe it’s down. If it is, contact your hosting provider and find out what the problem is. Find out if it’s a short term problem or if this is going to be something that will have you out of business for a while. This is why it’s good to diversify. That way, if one business goes down, you have others to fall back on.

If the site is operational, then check the traffic logs of when you were getting traffic. Look to see where it was coming from so you can see what’s changed. Sometimes, if you’re running an Adwords campaign, and that’s all you’re doing for traffic, if Adwords slaps your site, you’re virtually out of business. This is why it’s always a good idea to use multiple sources of promotion for your site since one type of promotion can go bad on you in a heartbeat.

What if your brick wall is that you’ve just completed your last project, it’s selling well, but you want to come up with your next product idea and just can’t. Nothing is coming to you. Well, there are several ways to deal with this problem.
First thing is to look at the product you’re currently selling and see how you can build on it. Maybe there is a sequel to this product in the making.

Another thing you can do is look to see what products are out on the market right now that are new. Maybe you can capitalize on one of them by offering a companion product or a competing product that is better and for less money. There are always new products coming out, so this shouldn’t be too hard to do.

As for the hosting company that went belly up on you, unfortunately there is only one way to deal with this. You simply have to get a new hosting company and quickly. If it’s an emergency, get something temporary, just to get your site back up and running. Then, over the next several weeks, you can do some research to see if there is something out there that’s better. But don’t be picky now. Get your business back up and running.

Over the course of you Internet marketing life you’re going to run into a number of those proverbial brick walls. How you deal with them will ultimately determine how successful you are with them in the long run.
