PlanningArticle #236 :THE DEATH OF EBOOKS
Okay, let’s get one thing straight right off the bat. Ebooks are not dead. Will they be someday? Hard to say, as anything is possible. But for the time being, ebooks are alive and well. So you’re probably wondering what the purpose of this article is. Well, I’m going to get to that.
Internet technology is forever changing. There are things that we have today that we didn’t have as recently as 6 months ago. The Internet changes a lot faster than the outside world, and marketers are not only always looking for the new hot product but for ways to deliver that new hot product.
Back in the good old days of Internet marketing, we didn’t even have PDF files. Most things you bought simply directed you to a web page where you read the information that you bought. Then the PDF files, or what we commonly refer to as ebooks, came to be. These really caught on and continue to sell, even today.
However, during the last few years, other ways to deliver information have been made available including CDs, DVDs, Audio Tapes, and a number of other mediums. Many marketing companies have started to get away from the digital download mentality and offer what I call “hard items” or things that you can hold in your hand. Of course the cost of these items, now that you have shipping and handling added, has gone through the roof.
And this is just what ebooks needed.
If you’re a little confused let me explain.
The early days of ebooks saw prices of under $20. To find ebooks that cost $97 and up was unheard of. Today, we’ve seen ebooks sell for as much as $997. Part of this is due to the coming of age of these hard items. Because the information is basically the same, ebook makers have begun to feel justified in charging higher prices for their goods. And why not? If the info is the same, just because one is delivered to your door and the other is downloaded doesn’t mean the price has to be different.
And then there is one other thing that you have to realize. Not everybody wants to listen to a CD or watch a DVD or drag around audio tapes to listen to in their cars. Some people really do like to read. This makes the ebook the attractive and first choice for them. That is why ebooks are still being sold today, and at higher prices than ever before.
Will the day ever come when ebooks are no more? Well, while I’d never bet my life on anything, I’d find it highly unlikely that ebooks will truly ever die. They may go through some radical changes, maybe linking in audio files as some are already starting to do, but the ebook should be around for a very long time.
