General Guidelines | Article #241 :BUT I THOUGHT…
In this article, I’m going to cover one of the biggest mistakes that an Internet marketer can make. It’s called thinking.
Okay, before you think that I’ve lost my mind, hear me out. Of course you want to think. Certainly you can’t run a successful business if you don’t put some serious thought into it. But that’s not the kind of thinking that I am talking about. So, in order for you to understand just what kind of thinking I am talking about, I am going to give you an example of how thinking can get you into a heap of trouble.
I bought a domain name about 10 years ago. It was supposed to be for my next big business, web design. I picked out the perfect name. I then registered it for a number of years right off the bat as I knew I’d be keeping it.
Then, one day I teamed up with another web design company and we joined forces. I had my domain moved to their servers. I got a great deal on hosting too. Life was very good.
Well, one day, I went to check on my domain and it was gone. Well, it wasn’t gone but my site was no longer there. I didn’t understand what the problem was. I know it was paid for. At least I thought it was paid for. Anyway, I called the hosting company and asked my partner Andy what the heck happened. His reply was, “Didn’t you renew the domain when you got the notice?” I said to him, “NO, I thought YOU were going to do it.”
Because I assumed that Andy was now going to take care of this, I figured that I didn’t have to. In the process, I lost one of the best domain names that you could possibly want to have for web hosting.
Well, I tried to buy it from the person who grabbed it, but at the time it was just too much money for me to afford. He wanted $10,000 for it. Yeah, can you say the word “opportunist?”
Please understand that I am not blaming anybody for this fiasco other than myself. It was my domain and I should have either been responsible for renewing it or at least ask my partner if he would take care if it for me. I did neither and lost out.
Everyday, as marketers, we assume things that we shouldn’t. When the end of the month comes, we assume that we are going to get our affiliate payments. We don’t follow up with the companies to find out what we didn’t get paid if we didn’t. Maybe there was a problem.
Oh, but it gets better. We join some program and we assume that it comes with all these great benefits. What we didn’t bother doing was read the fine print that says that these “extra” benefits are just that, extra, and you have to pay extra for them.
This is all a matter of simply not paying careful attention to details, and we’re all guilty of it. So whenever you get yourself involved in a partnership or a program or whatever, don’t think. That kind of thinking will always get you into trouble.
Believe me, I know.
