Phsychology | Article #270 :DO I NEED ALL THIS POWER?
Getting your brand new computer is a very exciting thing. I should know because I just got my new one. I’d been running this old Windows 2000 machine for several years now but with my great success, I decided that I deserved to have the best computer that money could buy. Well, maybe not that good.
My old PC had a 1.7 ghz CPU with 80 gig of hard drive space and 512 meg of RAM. Not too bad, and actually quite fast. But it doesn’t even come close to my new PC which is Windows XP Pro with a 3 ghz CPU, 2 RAID drives of 320 gig a piece and 3 gig of RAM. This computer can be used for some high powered multi-media productions.
But did I really need it for what I do?
The answer to that question is probably no. Internet marketing is not a high powered beast. Think about the size of the files that you’re dealing with if you’re involved in creating and even purchasing ebooks. I have yet to see an ebook that is more than 10 meg in size. Out of my 80 gig hard drive, in all these years, I’ve only used 20 gig of it. What in blazes am I going to do with 320 gigs of space, doubled?
Well, even though I most likely won’t need half the power that I have with this new PC, I remember a time about 10 years ago when I never thought I would ever need more than 20 gig of hard drive space. And then programs started becoming quite huge. It was nothing to buy a CD that unleashed a 1 gig monster onto your PC. With programs of that size and only a 20 gig hard drive, you’d be out of space with less than 20 applications.
The truth is, we really don’t know what the future is going to hold. Maybe Internet marketing is going to reach a point where ebooks will be dead and everything will be video and audio. And we all know how memory and space intensive those things can be.
Believe it or not, there is a point to this article and I’m getting to it right now.
If you’re just starting out in Internet marketing, you probably don’t have a lot of money. You can probably just about afford the computer you have now, let alone the one you want to get. Well, if that’s the case, don’t worry about it. Believe it or not, you can still do business on the Internet with a dial up connection, 10 gig of hard drive space and about 256 meg of RAM. Yes, your PC will run slow and you won’t be able to get the latest bells and whistles, but after you start to earn some money, you can always upgrade. Computer costs are coming down greatly. My system cost me under $2000. About 20 years ago this system would have been $100,000 or more.
So don’t sweat not having the coolest toys on the block. The fastest computer with the most memory and the biggest hard drive isn’t going to make the dollars enter your bank account any faster. That all comes down to product and marketing.
And you can do that on just about anything.
