$7 Secrets | Article #278 : DO I REALLY NEED A TEXT EDITOR?
A lot of people ask me if they need a text editor. Won’t Microsoft Word do just fine? Well, if you don’t do a lot of writing, maybe. But if you do as much writing as I do, then a text editor is not only a good thing to have, but it’s a must. The best way to explain this to you is to show you just what I use my text editor for. When you see all the files I deal with everyday, you’ll wonder how I keep track of them all even with a text editor.
First of all, I have many projects. That’s right, I have so many text files that I use on a daily basis that I have to group them into projects. I currently have about 5 or 6 projects. I lose track.
My first project is my affiliate marketing project. This is where I keep all the things I need to promote other people’s products.
One file in this project is a list of URLs. I can’t even begin to tell you how many URLs there are in this file. Many of the URLs are affiliate links. Whenever I need a link to a certain product, I just go to this file and there it is. This file also contains URLs to a lot of other sites that I use on a regular basis, including links to forum posts that I sometimes use as reference for somebody.
The next file is a list of all my thank you letters. Whenever somebody purchases a product from me, I simply go to this file and copy and paste the thank you letter for that particular product into an email. The only thing I have to add is the person’s name. This really saves a lot of time when sending out thank you letters.
The next file in this project contains all my ads. There are ads for just about everything I sell. If I come up with a new product or a new ad for an existing product I simply place the ad in this file. I currently have over 100 ads in this file alone.
The next file in this project is another ads file for a particular product. The reason I devote a whole file for this one product is because I write a new ad for this product every day. I can’t tell you how many I’ve written in 4 years.
The next file in this project is where I keep all my pending articles for one of my affiliate web sites, which happens to be a review site. I have over 100 articles posted there already and it’s only a couple of years old.
The next file in this project is a list of nothing but subject lines to use for my ads. I am constantly trying to come up with new and fresh subject lines. Whenever I think of one, it goes in this file.
In addition to these files I also keep php scripts loaded in this project for certain products that I promote where I want to use a certain script to do a certain thing. There are about 4 of these scripts in this project that I am constantly updating as I think of ideas.
What I have just described is one project. I have about 4 more of these. So as you can see, if I tried to juggle all these files in Word, I would literally lose my mind.
Do you need a text editor? Maybe not now, but someday you might.
