Residual Income | Article #291 : FLOGGING A DEAD HORSE
In my last article, I talked about how even a hard to crack niche, because of all the competition, could be cracked if you worked hard enough at it. In this installment, I’m going to go in the opposite direction and touch on when to decide that the horse you’re trying to flog is just too dead to move.
In order to get my point across, I am going to tell you a true story. I met a man on the Internet a while ago. He had received one of my emails about Internet advertising. He then called me on the phone because I always include my phone number with my email promotions. Anyway, he told me his story. He said that he’d been trying to get his Internet business up and running for some time now. He said it was a really great product that was very much in demand in this certain sector of the economy. He then told me what it was. Quite honestly, I had never heard of it before, but in the construction sector, it was a big thing.
We talked about the things he was doing to promote his site. In all honesty, what he was doing was not all that bad. Yes, there was room for improvement, but he certainly should have been getting some results with his efforts. But I noticed that he hadn’t tried using Google Adwords, which is a very targeted form of advertising. So I asked him if he had heard of it. He told me that he hadn’t. So I immediately decide to do a little research for him while I had him on the phone.
The first thing I did was to go to his web site and see what his keywords were. I then took the main keywords and went to Google to see how many competing sites he had. I couldn’t find any. I was a little dumbstruck. How could there be no sites for this thing?
The next thing I did was to go to Wordtracker and see how many searches there were for this main keywords. I guess I should have known what was coming even before I got there. Sure enough, Wordtracker showed that there were no monthly searches for this product.
Now, there may have been a demand for this thing, which was some kind of reinforced wall, in the construction sector, but there was no demand for it on the Internet. At least not yet.
I told him that he was going to have to make people aware of this because nobody was out there looking for it. There was no point in starting a Google campaign because there would be no impressions since there were no monthly searches.
Quite honestly, I didn’t know what to tell him. If there were at least people searching for this item, I’d say give it a shot. But given the conditions of the Internet market, which was non existent, I didn’t have a clue how to help him.
Personally, I would have done this research before I even bothered putting up the site. That way I’d at least know what my chances were.
Hopefully, this will be the lesson that you’ll be left with.
Do your research BEFORE you put up your site.
