Social Bookmarking | Article #306 : SOCIAL BOOK MARKING – PART 6

In our last installment of social book marking, we went over the many wonders of Wikilink. Now that we’ve explored a lot of what the Internet has to offer us in the way of social book marking, it’s time to explore just what all this blink and link, as I like to call it, will do for you.

The thing that we all have going for us in our favor with these social book marking sites, is that they are all the rage. This means that a lot of people are hanging out at these sites. That means more potential visitors to our sites.

The bad thing about most of these social book marking sites is that most of them are run by the inmates. In other words, if they don’t like the site you’ve bookmarked, they can easily have it removed. This makes getting your business seen very hard. You have to be very clever not to give the appearance of outright advertising, which a lot of these sites are dead set against.

The best thing to do when going to a social book marking site is to register, log in and then observe. Don’t post anything. Just take a look around to see what kinds of links get posted. Some sites, like Digg, are very specialized and only cater to certain topics. So make sure that the site you are at will even allow a post for your site.

Another thing you want to look for is to see if any of the links posted are blatant advertisements. If they are and they’re allowed to remain, then the site has a lenient policy about what’s posted and you shouldn’t have much trouble posting just about anything for your site. Also, if the site is maintained by the administrator and not the inmates, there’s a good chance that your post will stand the test of time.

You also want to look for a social book marking site where your links are going to be visible on the main page for at least some time. Some of these sites have so much traffic that a link can be gone in a matter of minutes. Pages that display the most number of links per page are probably your best bet.

Social book marking sites are very protective communities. The founding members of these sites look over them like mother hens. So if you rush your way into one of these like a bull in a china shop, you will probably get thrown out on your ear faster than you can say “Bookmark this please.” But if you obey the rules and show that you’re there to share information, you’ll be just fine.

As to how effective social book marking will be for you, well, it’s pretty much like with forums. If you tow the line, provide relevant information and follow the guidelines, provided you hang around long enough to gain respectability, you should do just fine.

The bottom line is this. Social book marking appears to be here to stay. So make the most of it. It just may add a few zeros to your bottom line when the year is over.
