Networking| Article #308 :LEARN FROM YOUR PAST – THEN FORGET IT

Human beings are oddball animals. If you ever watched a cat, you’d notice something stranger about the cat. If it climbs up on a couch and starts scratching at the couch and the owner comes over and smacks the cat on the behind, the cat might turn around for a second and give the owner a look, but will eventually go back to scratching on the couch. After a while, you might end up chasing the cat away. But you can bet dollars to donuts that the cat will be back on that couch soon and start scratching away at it again.

Cats neither learn from their past nor do they remember it. If they did, they’d know that if they went back to the couch and began scratching on it, they’d end up getting whacked on the behind.

Human beings though are weird. They can’t forget their past. Every single mistake they’ve ever made they dwell on. Yet, if you think they learn from those mistakes, think again. They continue to make the same ones over and over, expecting different results.

They say that the definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over and expecting different results. I don’t know if that’s true, but certainly if you do something and get a certain result, doing the same thing and getting a different result is not likely to happen.

Let’s take for example posting FFA ads. For those of you who have done this, you know that the only thing you’re going to get is junk email. I’ve known people who have done this for months and even though they haven’t made one dime from this method of advertising, they continue to do it. It’s almost like they’ve completely forgotten that the day before when they did this, their email box filled up with junk. Either that or they think something is going to change.

Finally, after months and months of doing this, they give up. They finally got it into their head that this form of advertising is worthless. So what do they do? They sit around for months after that complaining to people about how they posted FFA ads for months and months and didn’t get anywhere with them. They know they wasted their time and yet they can’t seem to move on.  They’re obsessed with all those months that they wasted their time on posting those ads. They almost let it consume them with guilt and anger at all the wasted time.

People, it’s time to move on. You screwed up, you know it, and you learned from it, now forget it. I’m not saying to forget the lesson you learned because if you do that then you’ll end up posting those stupid FFA ads again. Just forget the wasted time. Dwelling on the past doesn’t do you any good.

For those who have had failed businesses, one after another for years and years, forget them. Remember what you did wrong and learn from your mistakes, but don’t moan to people about how you’ve been trying to make a living on the Internet for 5 years and haven’t made a dime. Nobody is going to listen to you whine. Now, ask them for some advice and they’ll be glad to help you.

Yes, human beings are odd animals too. But at least they have an advantage over cats.

Nobody has to hit me on the behind more than once.
