Networking| Article #311 : CAN YOU SWIM?

I know. This sounds like another screwball topic. Well, when I am done with it, you’ll understand exactly what I am talking about. If not, read it again because eventually it will make sense.

So, can you swim? Yes. Hey, that’s great. Well then let me ask you another question. Can you swim across a small lake? Probably? Okay. Well what about if the lake was frozen? What do you mean of course not because it’s frozen? Okay, what about the English Channel? Can you swim across the English Channel? What do you mean am I crazy? I thought you said you can swim. What do you mean too hard, too far, not trained? Other people have done it.

Okay, what if I said I would get you a coach to teach you to swim the English Channel? No, he hasn’t swum the English Channel, but I saw him take a couple of laps in the pool once. I’m sure he’ll be able to teach you to swim the English Channel. What do you mean no?

Do you see where I’m going with this? If not, then let me explain it in plain English, and not the English Channel.

When we start out trying to make a living on the Internet, we have no idea what we’re doing. We can’t swim, we’ve never taken a lesson, and yet we expect to make millions of dollars a year which is like swimming the English Channel. Now how crazy is that?

But this is where it gets even crazier. We think that we’re going to learn how to swim that English Channel from somebody who has maybe swum a few laps around the pool. How much money do you really think you’re going to make learning from somebody who’s maybe making a few hundred dollars a month?

Sure, there are some very naturally talented and brilliant people in this world. But how may of them are there. Are you one of them? If you were, I seriously doubt you’d be reading this right now. I can tell you for certain that I’m not. Everything I learned I learned from people who DID swim the English Channel and not from some guy who can just about swim around his pool.
I’m not saying you can’t learn something from somebody who just swims around his pool. But don’t expect to learn enough to turn you into an income earning machine. It’s just not going to happen.

What you need to do is find somebody who really knows what they are doing. They’re out there. They may not mentor you for free or cheap, but they’re out there. If you want to learn from them, then you have to sit down and decide how important it is for you to swim that English Channel. If you really want to succeed and don’t think you can do it on your own, then you’ll seek out the help that you need.

Can you swim?

I hope so, otherwise you’re going to end up drowning in your own backyard pool.
