Networking| Article #312 : NETWORKING LIES – PART 1

We’ve all be lied to from time to time. Unfortunately, when it comes to making money on the Internet, there are enough lies going around to choke the life out of any marketer. While I can’t possibly cover them all, I’m going to cover a few of them in this article and hope that it makes some sense to at least a few of you. If I’ve managed that, then I’ve done my job.

Network Marketing Is A Numbers Game – Let’s get rid of this one big lie right off the bat. Anybody who thinks network marketing is a numbers game is stark raving mad.

Imagine that you own a shoe store that specializes in men’s work boots. Do you really think you’re going to sell a pair of those boots to a supermodel who happens to walk in off the street? Once she sees that all you have is boots, she’ll be gone.

Now, if every single person who walked into your store off the street as a woman, do you think you would sell one pair of boots? Maybe if one of those women worked as a steel worker, but in most cases, not likely.

The truth is, not everybody is going to be interested in your business and no matter how hard you try, there are certain people who will never become customers. What you have to do is target the people who ARE interested in your business and that means going out and finding them.

Network Marketing Is A Sales Business – Here’s another big lie. Network marketing is a people business. If you’ve ever communicated with somebody, either through email or on the phone, and managed to get them into your business, it wasn’t because they thought the business model was so great. It was because they liked YOU. Something about you made them trust you. You were honest, straight forward and didn’t load them up with a lot of hype. You offered them personal help. If you DIDN’T do these things then maybe it explains why they DIDN’T join your business.

No Is A Good Thing – Whoever came up with this one had to be just plain desperate or crazy. Since when is no a good thing? Sure, in an earlier article I pointed out that no doesn’t always mean no. But I didn’t say it was a good thing. And the worst part about this lie is that they tell you that it takes 99 no’s to get that 1 yes. Since when? This is the stupidest stat I have ever seen thrown at me. So if I take my wife out for a lovely dinner, buy her a nice present and then at the end of the night she says no, I’m supposed to say “Oh great, just 98 more and I’m home free?” Absolute hogwash! No’s are bad. And the reason we get so many of them is because we don’t know how to approach people and we have no credibility, among other things.

In our next installment of our series on networking lies, we’ll go over a few more of the best lies you’ll ever hear.
