Sales Pitching| Article #53: THE SALES PITCH – MESSAGE BOARD COPY

Message Boards. They are fascinating places. The one good thing about message boards is that they're, for the most part, pretty easy going about what you post. As long as it's not an outright scam, they'll allow just about anything. That doesn't mean you should go there and start spamming the heck out of these places. If you work message boards correctly, you can actually come away with quite a few sales at the end of the month. The key is to know how to write ad copy for message boards.
Subject - The subject is pretty much the same as for email ad copy. You need to come up with a subject that is going to grab people. But in the case of message boards, it's even harder than with email sales copy. See, with email copy there is always a chance that your email will be the only one in their in box. But with message boards, there are always going to be tons of other ads on the page along with yours. So you really have to come up with some killer subjects to get somebody's attention. Use your imagination.
Body - The body of the message should be more of a conversational style. Too many people put these short ads on message boards with just one sentence and then a link to a site. Nobody is going to bother with these, that's if they ever got beyond the boring subjects they use like "This Is Perfect For Moms." Yeah, sure it is. With all the message boards ads basically saying the same thing, how is your ad going to stand out if you use "This Is Perfect For Moms?" I'm sorry, we're passed the subject and I should get passed it too. Okay, the body has to be conversational and long. People on message boards like to read. That's why they're at message boards. People checking email basically just want to delete all the junk. They don't have as much patience for reading.
Tell A Story - This is where you can really tell your story about how you struggled. Make it as personal as you can. You want these people to be able to relate to you and what you've been through. Don't be afraid to use language that isn't so polished like you would in an email. This can be a lot less formal. Plus, because of not having to worry about email delivery, you don't have to worry about using spam trigger words like money, guarantee, free, etc. You can and SHOULD use these words as much as you can. Your message board message really has to sell your site, and it should. By the time they go there, they should be all ready to buy. The rest is just a formality.
Get In Their Face - Like I said, get personal. Getting in their face means just that. Make them see that unless they get your fantastic product, they are going to be sorry they ever ignored your warnings. Make it crystal clear to them that without your product they are going to be missing out on either money, health or whatever it is you're promoting. Remember, there are many different types of message boards, so you can sell just about anything on them. It's just a matter of finding the ones that are the best match for the product you're selling.
Message board advertising can be very effective if you don't do what everybody else does. See, most seasoned marketers don't go near message boards because it's too much work for them. So this is an untapped market for you.
