Reasons People Buy| Article #61: WHY PEOPLE BUY THINGS – PART 5

In this installment of "Why People Buy Things" we're going to go over reason number 6, which is planned purchase.

Not everything we buy is on the spur of the moment. Sometimes we make up our minds that we're going to buy something. We've researched the item in question, weighed the pros and cons of getting it and ultimately decided that this is something that we need to have. At this stage, it's simply a matter of either going to our favorite store to purchase the item, or if it's something that we can't get in a store, we then go to the Internet. This is where you can take advantage of this situation.

If you're selling a product or service on the Internet, hopefully it is not something that you can easily get at the local supermarket. For example. You DON'T want to sell dog food online. Why? Well, for many reasons. Not the least of which is because the dog food in the store is sold too cheaply for you to be able to compete with the prices. Once shipping costs get a hold of your dog food, you're history. That is why you won't see a lot of people selling items like this online unless they are able to get them at really insane prices.

What you want is to sell a product online that can't be bought in stores. Even more than that, you want to sell a product that doesn't have a lot of competition. That way when a person goes looking for this particular item, they have a better chance of seeing your web site because there aren't a lot of web sites selling these things. The key is to find a niche that has enough of a demand that you can make some money with it but not too much of a demand that you are competing with thousands of other sites. The best way to do this is to do a keyword search for your product and see how many searches are done each month for that keyword. If you're getting 2 million searches a month than most likely you're going to have a lot of competition. But if you're getting only 10,000 searches a month then you've probably got a nice little niche that you can get into.

Once you get these people to your site, you have to make sure that you keep them there. You have to put up a site that will attract their eye, content that will keep them reading and products and prices that will have them convinced that they'd be crazy to go anywhere else for the product or service that they're looking for. If this sounds like a tall order, it's not. Just think about what YOU would want to see at a site if you went there looking for a particular item.

With a little thought, a good product and a killer price, you can corner a part of the market for people who are making planned purchases.
