Safelists | Article #91 : THE HOLIDAY SALES MYTH

With Thanksgiving coming up, I thought it was appropriate to comment on another myth that seems to be saturating the Internet with absolutely no foundation. So it's time to put the record straight about making sales on the holiday.

Let me start off by saying that you're not going to make as many sales on the holidays as a normal day simply because there are a good number of people who are away and not near a computer. However, the notion that you're lucky to make even ONE sale on a holiday is absolutely absurd. There are several reasons for this.

For starters, one thing that other marketers do on the holiday is just what everybody is accusing the whole world of doing. They're taking the day off. They don't send out ads, they don't frequent forums, they don't do anything. Why? Because they don't think there is anybody out there to market to. Wrong. But we'll cover that later. The point is, since there are fewer marketers online, that means one very important thing. Less competition. If you don't have as many people sending out their sales message, then YOUR sales message has a better chance of being read, especially if you use email marketing. So if you simply take advantage of the fact that most marketers have given up on the day, you have a very good chance of having a decent sales day, even if there are fewer people to market to.

Another reason that making sales on the holidays is certainly more than possible is because there are actually people out there who work so much during the week, and hardly ever get the chance to get on the computer, that in between courses and listening to dull stories from Aunt Maggie, they can't wait to sneak off to the computer room just to see what's going on. This is a brand new market to sell to. And with the fewer marketers to contend with, who's ad do you think they're going to see first? Yours.

And then there is something that many people seem to forget about. On and around the holidays, people are out there looking to buy presents, not just for other people but for themselves. They may have just gotten a bonus from work and can't wait to spend some of that money on that new ebook that they said they'd get if they just had the extra money.

To prove my point, last December I made more sales that month than in any other month of the whole year. And that was having to contend with Christmas and New Year's Eve. Part of the reason I has such a good month was because there were just so few people promoting that I had an open field to work with.

Does it require some sacrifice to be successful on the holidays? Yes. For one thing, it requires you to work on one of your few days off. But if you want to take advantage of this very special day then that is the price you have to pay. In the long run, if you run a good campaign and work smart, you'll be glad you did.
